San Diego DBA
Any individual conducting a for-profit business (using a name other than his or her own legal name) in the County of San Diego is required to file a Fictitious Business Name Statement other wise know as DBA. The form must be filed with the office of the County Recorder or County Clerk within 40 days of your first business transaction. You the business owner must conduct your own name search prior to filing: While the Clerk accepts your form for processing, he or she does not check to see if the name is available. Note that filing a FBN statement does not guarantee you exclusive use of your selected business name.
After you complete your name search, in-person processing is strongly recommended. After you file the form and pay your fee at the customer counter, you'll receive a copy for your records. Once your name is registered, it's good for five years- but only in the county where your business' principal offices are located. As long as your address remains the same, you'll receive a reminder notice when the time comes that you need to renew your business name. If you must file your DBA by mail, you have to fill out the form using black ink only. Your last step is published notice of your new DBA in a local newspaper, once a week for four consecutive weeks, within 30 days of filing.
The county clerk's office doesn't take telephone requests for business name searches, but LegalCPU does. We'll look up your top three name choices, let you know if they're available, file your DBA form and publish notice all for one low package price.
